A: We're unsure why the optical system in the Nikon Monarch 10x42 ATB binocular gives greater field of view than the Leupold Green Ring Cascades of the same configuration. Neither company publishes the specs on its optical system. We like Nikon Monarchs. Monarch 8x42 and 10x42 placed second and 8th respectively in the Cornell University Ornithology Lab's 2005 rankings of mid-price birding binoculars. Leupold Cascades were not ranked, but the Leupold Wind River Katmai 6x32 took top honors in the mid-price category. Wind River Pinnacle 8x42s were fourth, and 8x32 Katmais were 10th.

Q6: For hunting purposes, I am looking at the Leupold Windriver Cascades and the Pentax DCF HR II. I am trying to stay around $300. Can you break the tie between the two?

A: Hi Mr. Aiken, Thank you for your email. Well, I'm not sure if I can break the tie but I can certainly give you some pro's and con's that might help you make your decision! The first thing I noticed immediately was that the field of view in the Pentax is 50 feet wider than the Leupolds. (315 ft @ 1,000 yds vs. 267ft @ 1,000 yds. The weights are within .30 lbs of one another. The exit pupil is slightly larger than the Leupold and both have excellent eye relief (if you wear glasses ever). The Pentax are excellent all around: full multi-coatings/phase coated prisms/ waterproof&fogproof.The Leupolds appear to be excellent too - with multi-coated optics. Personally, I would choose the Pentax because of the wider field of view (a 10x magnification can be difficult to hold still in hunting situations - extra field of view will allow you to stay on an object a little easier without losing it). The full multi-coating compared to a multi-coating can make a difference too. The more coatings and the more light you are able to capture inside of your binocular. . the better you'll be.
